Seeing Dr. John was a thrill. Having listened to his (mostly more popular recordings) for many years, and knowing of the hundreds (maybe thousands) of recordings he has guested-on over such a long time, this was a time for us to get a more personal prescription filled.
Ranging from his commercially known great rendition of IKO IKO to his hit "Right Place, Wrong Time" to social commentary such as "And the Monkey Speaks His Mind" (not sure if this is the title, but it's memorable), and back and forth from bayou/swamp sounds to jazz to rock to blues to a bit of dixieland to standards and things that elude definition; what a tremendous show.
His band is tight and fun. His musical director, a female trombone player who shared backing vocals with the rest of the band, was nothing short of phenomenal.
I didn't realize the Dr. also played guitar, and a wicked bit of rock and blues guitar at that.
