So Cheap Trick opened with a tape featuring Japanese DJ's, snippets of hits and even the riff from Sergeant Peppers. Pretty Cool. Then we were told that Cheap Trick was "The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band." Here is where the problems started. Cheap Trick is the world's greatest power pop rock band, a big difference. Mr. Nielsen, Mr. Zander and Mr. Petterson (alas Mr. Siegel is not touring with them} are consummate musicians, stage performers, and songwriters.
In Robin Zander, they have one of the outstanding Lead Singers of all time. Rick Nielsen is one of the great characters of all time, and a suoer tallented guitarist. Their first five albums were classics, untouched by their peers. Their worship of The Beatles guiilless and refreshingly fun. Only Ike and Tina touch them when interperting Beatles songs. I rank seeing them perform the Sergeant Peppers album live as one of my favorite concert experiences of all time. It was not a karaoke or tribute band performance, they sublimely played and sang, bring into sparkling life one of the greatest , if not the greatest album of all time.
OK, so I have established I am a huge fan. Why was this concert such a mess? Why am I now depressed, knowing I will never attend another concert by one of my favorite bands? Because they had the volume cranked up so G.D. loud I could barely tell one song from another. Sure, Don't be Cruel was sparkling and restrained (volume wise, at least.} But as for the rest, most everyone in the balcony that I saw beelined for the bathrooms for some toilet paper to make improvised ear plugs. Even with those, many of the devoted fans I saw had fingers in their ear drums or just their whole hands clapped over their ears. I can only say TURN IT DOWN!
