I have seen Dickey Betts numerous times dating back 25 years and one thing has become obvious to me over the last two concerts and that is that Dickey has had better days. I had a great seat just a few rows from the stage.
Dickey, it seems, just can't quite play as he did at one time. He had several times during the show that he seemed to struggle playing guitar for longer than a few notes. He seemed to play the same little riff of notes and play it off as an innovative solo. This Betts is a shadow the one I saw in late 1980s through early 2000s that would amaze with his guitar work.
The band sounded out os sync several tiems during the evening and it was primarily the guitars. The last time I saw Betts, and it was at the same location, the same thing ocurred at the beginning of the show, they sounded horribly out of sync. During that previous show, the band got things together and it was a pretty darn good concert. This time, they struggled through the entire show.
The drummers were excellent together, along with the bass. The keyboardist seemed to have to carry much of the instrumental portion of the show, in that Betts just isn't very good anymore. The other lead guitarist is also very good, but he gets little time as a soloist, other than the lead in In Memory of Elizibath Reed, in which he scorched the guitar.
Finally, the show consisted of only about 8 or 9 songs. High Falls, In Memory of Liz Reed, Jessica and Blue Skies each topped out near 15 minutes.
