I lost track of America years ago and wasn't expecting much more than a nice ride down memory lane. Man did they exceed expectations. Dewey sounds as good as ever. Gerry's voice has changed more yet remains endearing and he's still a virtuoso with several instruments. They both exude a joy and enthusiasm for their music, including the old hits despite having sung them thousands of times. The other members of the band are wonderful musicians who never detracted from the songs and quite often elevated the performance. You felt like you were among old friends who are glad to see you. They offered a few covers that were terrific and some newer songs, which were pretty good but were overshadowed by the nostalgic power, and quality, of their initial hits. Their rendition of "Sandman" was electrifying, the highlight of the night. They saved the song about an anonymous equine for last, very cute. But I think a better send off would have been "Sister Golden Hair" because of its higher energy and exclamatory finish...more of a musical rim shot (I can hear that even louder applause, the leave-them-wanting-more effect). Wonderful. Well worth it. Went in thinking I'd see them once more time for old times' sake but left knowing I'd see them again if given the chance.
