I first saw Sweet Honey in 1985, in Kenya, and I've followed them ever since. There is always a lesson in our civil rights movement because of the link between the Freedom Singers and Honey's founder Bernice Johnson Reagon. Their acappella performance is enhanced with unusual musical instruments and occasionally a violin, and each member of the group contributes a breath-taking solo throughout the concert. And when they sing together...powerful! Shiku,Shiku is a song that brings you a train running through your mind. This evening showcased a tribute to the women who sang or wrote civil rights songs - Miriam Makeba, Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, and Odeta. Billie Holliday's "Tell me more and more and then some" was delightful - with the tempo and intensity varying, and accompanied by beautiful, rhythmic dancing. The CD is available - buy it, but the best is SEEING everyone together in a blending of memories - Ysaye Barnwell is retiring, and she is spectacular. Listen carefully for her magnificent bass voice - inspirational. Lastly, the sign language interpreter is a such a special part of this group -- you'll find yourself watching her often because of her gentle, graceful interpretation of what they're singing. What a night!!
