I love me some Stryper. I've been a fan since 1984 and have seen the band nine times since the first time a friend put the screams of "Loud and Clear" on his turn table for me.
Thursday night, July 26th at the HOB in Orlando was a rough night for the boys.
Michael confessed to the crowd that he was still recovering from an illness he picked up a couple weeks before while touring in eastern Europe. There were no familiar high notes, but Michael did pour what he had into the songs, as best he could. Oz covered a lot of the vocals and Tim killed it as usual.
The illness led to more crowd banter than normal. I would say the band talked at least 20 minutes of the 75 minutes they were on the stage. It was a bit like watching Ali in his late career covering up his face and hiding in the ropes to "outlast" his opponent.
The band kicked off the set with "Sing Along Song." In my opinion, the lamest song they ever penned. This was the song that truly turned the stomachs of their original hard rock fans as they tried to gain more market share and exposure during the MTV rich "To Hell With the Devil Album." Gentlemen, I don't care what the billboards say, please take that song off future set lists... or at least don't start with it. Please. You have written at least a dozen songs that would be better openers. Again, please, let's sing along to something else.
Beyond that, the band killed it and gave their hearts and abilities to the Lord that evening.
Now, to the HOB folks. Please hire FOH people that can actually mix. All night long I get hammered in the chest with 100Hz and less from the kick drum while the mids were completely missing. It's the best twin guitar 80s band ever... and I can't hear the guitars.
Unbelievable.
C'mon HOB. You're one of the last good places to see live music. Get a real engineer. Or, if you're going to hire some Full Sail graduate who wasn't even born by the 80s and has only ever listened to the bass beats of hip hop artists.... and thinks chunky midrange should be drowned out at all costs.... save that guy for the hip hop shows. Please.
The sound quality this night really was awful.
Finally. Stryper please bring back some theatrics to your stage show. Stripe those amp cabinets or bring back the "wall of stripes" facade you've had in the past. Put Robert's Crush drums back in a striped cage. Half of your draw was your look. It feels like you're touring on the cheap. I'd pay another $20 at the HOB to see the "real show." Your crowd's are going to keep thinning if you don't bring the real deal back, IMHO.
A new album of original "back to the Hell with the Devil era sound" was hinted at by Michael this night. Good. But, I would suggest taking it back to the first two albums. Put Oz in the driver's seat and let that long hair write some chunky riff magic.
Thanks!
