Incredible. One of the best shows I have been to yet. Leonard and his magnificent band played for well over 3 hours. Classic after classic with a few new ones thrown in. Leonard himself, standing throughout the entire performance. At 78, that feet alone left me highly impressed. Leonard Cohen blew me away and I am sure not a single person in the sold out audience would disagree.

This is one of the most memorable shows I've ever been to. I haven't seen a show this perfect since I saw Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros in Seattle in 2001. Although he had the self-possession and confidence of the elder statesman he is, Cohen performed his over three hour show with the energy of a 20 year old on the verge of breaking.

I have loved him as a singer, a poet, and a performer for years. Friday night's performance continued to keep all those feelings alive. He connected to the audience throughout the evening with his humor and his songs. What a show!!! He was on stage almost three-and-a-half hours and his energy never waned. Leonard Cohen, the consumate performer!!!

I have been a fan of Leonard Cohen from his first album, but had never seen him in concert until a few years ago. That was a magestic experience. So was this most recent show.

It's well known that Cohen labors to craft perfect lines of lyrical poetry. It's stunning to hear song after song where the words engage us so intimately and emotionally. The musicianship of his band, their tightness in arrangements both simple and complex, and the deep respect he shows his fellow players all contribute to the performance.

His "golden voice" was in fine form.

It was a transcendent experience.

Faith. Let’s start with that. The Leonard Cohen concert at Red Rocks on June 4 went a long way toward restoring my faith in the concert setting as a source of personal inspiration. I’ve become used to so much loud, brash rock and roll pounding up the hillside, pulsing with more adrenalin than art, that an event geared a completely different direction was refreshing and rejuvenating. If I can see any more concerts like Cohen’s Red Rocks show again- a very stirring and satisfying experience- I wouldn’t want to pass it up- it was so sublime.

That was the first thing that struck me when I arrived at Red Rocks- there wasn’t any music booming out of the speakers to pump people up. All you could hear was the murmur of patrons talking among themselves, patiently waiting for the event to begin. The relative quiet was striking indeed, especially once the concert began. I was astonished to note that the majority of people were sitting and listening- not stonefaced, mind you, but intent on HEARING the music, a novel idea in most big concert situations. Sure, there were some annoying talkers and yellers in the crowd, but they were relatively few and isolated. The rest of the audience exhibited a kind of concentration on the music that helped restore my faith in people- you can take some of them out in public to hear music and they can act civilly to each other.

It should be said that the concert on June 4 was a postponed date. The original concert was scheduled for June 2, but excessive rain and abnormally low temperatures prompted the postponement. The crowd that did show up on June 4 was significantly thinned out from those who had tickets for the original scheduled date. So much so, that ushers in the upper third of the amphitheatre invited patrons to move down closer- kind of an unprecedented offer at Red Rocks. The crowd filled in the seats below and roughly half the venue was full when Cohen took the stage. This restored my faith that it is possible to see a major music event without having people jammed up against you, yelling in your ear.

On this night, the weather cooperated and it was a fine, beautiful Colorado night, the wind picking up only towards the end of the show- certainly sweetening the deal already made great by being able to see a rare concert date with Cohen. The calm air and the rocks themselves served to accentuate the finely crafted, deliberate music being played on the stage. As stated, most concerts project with a kind of sonic aggression aimed at overpowering the audience. Cohen’s music, however, was too cool and collected for that and my faith in Red Rocks as a world-class venue was restored as nearly every word and every note was clear and balanced- something that can hardly be discerned at higher volume- and what wasn’t perfect about the venue that night was evidently made up for by Cohen, his band and his technicians. It was gorgeous sound.

But more than just the sound, the band was fulfilling some gorgeous arrangements of a huge swath of Cohen’s best material. From the warm, mellow sound of Neil Larsen at the Hammond organ to the impressive woodwind diversity of Dino Soldo; Bob Metzger’s tasteful guitar work to Rafael Bernardo Gayol’s tasteful drums and percussion support; from the exciting Spanish stylings of Javier Mas on guitar, banduria and more to the beautiful mix of supporting vocals by Cohen’s songwriting collaborator Sharon Robinson and Charley Webb and Hattie Webb, every part was in place, every note deliberate, yet performed with vigor and meaning. All of this was under the musical direction of bassist Roscoe Beck who bobbed enthusiastically behind Cohen throughout the evening at Red Rocks. This ensemble should be remembered as one of the finest touring bands of our time, restoring my faith that there are still musicians out there who can not only play their instruments well, but can also blend their playing into that of others to make MUSIC.

But above and beyond the exceptional conditions and skilled musicianship, the Cohen concert was a rich experience because being able to just sit back and listen and take in the words of the songs was a bonus pleasure. And that’s where it got deep, too. Cohen’s lyrics are poetry in disguise and as they rolled up the amphitheatre, some lines would catch in the ear and linger until another one did the same thing. Enjoying Cohen’s performance didn’t necessarily depend on any one song to succeed, but offered a constant flow of language that brimmed over with alluring images and clever turns of phrase. The songs were full of gritty darkness, even horror, but also tenderness and beauty- as well as some very dry humor. Towards the end of the show I fantasized that Cohen was actually a painter and each song was a painting- something you had to look at and study in both detail and a bigger view, prompting the desire to hear all of it again. Presented with such interesting pieces of art, my faith was restored in songform for supplying poignant words and memorable melodies that have continued to give pause, however vaguely, long after the concert.

Watching Cohen perform on stage was also a particular pleasure. He began most tunes by kneeling down low to the stage, bringing himself up slowly. He didn’t particularly move around the stage a lot, but when he did move, it seemed motivated by the drama in the material, accentuating it ever so gracefully. His voice was deep and resonant, made strong by his current touring effort. I liked his gentle between song patter and how he kept referring to the audience as “my friends.” Even better, I liked how whenever he left the stage, he broke into a big, loping skip. He had every reason to be happy, musically anyway, because this performance, this tour was not just a revival of his work, but a refinement and even an artistic realization of it. At 74 years old, Cohen seems to be enjoying a peak point in his career and that restores my faith in growing older.

So what was so great about the Cohen concert? All sorts of elements, but the biggest benefit from the event was that it strengthened my faith in general. I’m a little bit stronger person than I was before the show- and good art should be able to do that. Cohen presented some great art at Red Rocks and I came away feeling better, somehow more ready to face the future. So this ends up being about the future, not about an event that is over. Thanks to Cohen and band, I am looking ahead with a little bit more soul than I had before and there’s a new faith I can claim in music, poetry and joining together with others to share a good time.

I had waited years for the chance to see my generation's finest songwriter/poet perform and thought I might never get that chance. Fate plays strange tricks on us all; his financial loss became our artisitic and intellectual gain. His rich baritone, mellowed and refined through the years, continues to amaze - and coupled with a talented group of musicians and singers provided me and my husband with one of the most memorable concert moments of our lives.

First, I am not young, and second, I was never a big Leonard Cohen fan. That said, I would put this in the top 5 shows I have ever seen in my life, and I've seen a lot of shows. What has changed in him over the years, and that he has perfected recently, is the music itself. He has always been a gifted poet and he understands music well enough that the bones of his songs stand up to being sung by other people beautifully. But now, with this eclectic band and powerful singers, he has made a palette of beauty that he, as centerpiece and artist, uses to paint his songs. All of that is very erudite, but ultimately, this 74-year-old man did a 3-hour set with no opening act, perfectly paced, powerfully performed, and the mix of humor and sadness was balanced in both the music and the lyrics and the repartee. It was an experience the 8000 people at Red Rocks will not soon forget. It was the last show on this tour... and no other tour is scheduled. That may have made it a notch better as well.

I had never seen Cohen in concert. Listening to his work from over the years, as his voice deepened, and he sharpened his written and sung words ever more closely to perfection, I should have suspected what was to come. Where his earlier recordings and performances hinted at it, this is now a fully-realized poet, performer, artist, and man who has climbed the mountain and is now transcribing and describing for us the vast vision he sees. I've been to many concerts over the last 40+ years, this is top-five of all, one of those rare moments that transcends concert-going and becomes illumination. Never to be forgotten.

Cohen did not fail to disappoint. Great show, Numerous encoreseft little to be desired ( except maybe not singing The Sisters of Mercy, a personal Favourite.

I only wished I has coughed the extra $200 for level 100 seats. My seats, in 205 although not terrible, were sub optimal. Unfortunately $85 a seat is what I could afford.

Nonetheless. Although the tickets were overpriced specially compared to his last visit, the show was great, and one of his best ever.

This show was an event of a lifetime for me. It is doubtful that Leonard will ever make another swing through Winnipeg. His energy level was amazing for a 78 yr. old. The quality of the 3.5 hr. concert was superb. A great mix of the old and the new.

Incredible show by a Canadian icon. At age 78 his performance was more like that of a man 50 years younger in terms of his stage presence and performance. Song after song he wowed the audience and made it seem like he was performing at a house party before a few close friends. His musicians and backup vocalists were incredible in their own right and he featured each of them several times throughout the show. The sound was excellent. Despite the huge space with every available seat packed it was a very intimate show. There are not enough superlatives to describe this show. When will he be back again?

This was one of the best events I've ever attended. When LC came out he said they would give us everything they had- well they did and MORE. The singers, band, sound, lighting, and of course LC were just amazing. This was a serious, Jewish, 'come to Jesus moment!' The audience was so fired up, LC and the group gave us 3 encores, it was just fantastic.

I sat in the Orchestra section, and am so glad I did. Leonard Cohen's performance is very up close and personal. To see the interaction between the band members makes the extra cost of the ticket completely worth it! It's kind of like when you want to see a movie on the "big screen," because you know the experience will be phenomenal.

Outstanding show. Cohen hasn't lost a step and I can't say enough about his choice of musicians - top notch professionals all. I'd also like to give the Sound Engineers a plug. Everywhere I went in the theater, the sound was great, even up in the balcony. The only negative I have is about the fools who thought themselves more important than everyone else by arriving late, returning late from intermission and thinking that being half in the bag gave them license to compete with Cohen on vocals; but regrettably, I guess that's just part of the current concert scene. Can't teach people manners during a live concert.

From 8:10 PM until just before midnight, 78-year-old Leonard Cohen performed for 3 1/2 hours, including seven encores, delivering one of the most memorable and delightful evenings of music I've ever had the privilege of attending. We had amazing seats, 6th row center, and Leonard was in fine form--funny and filled with an very Zen balance of humility and gratitude. He is touring with a remarkable group of musicians, and his voice, while always at a low gravelly growl, is still the finest instrument ever to interpret his haunting lyrics.

I had never seen Leonard Cohen perform live before, so I can’t compare his Memphis show to anything of his from the past, but I can say it ranks as one of the best concerts I’ve ever witnessed.

It was more entertaining and enjoyable than the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, U2, the Eagles, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen, to name just a few. Granted, this wasn’t an arena show like U2 or the Stones, so it’s not really an apples-to-apples comparison, but the only concerts that rival Cohen’s Orpheum performance in terms of amazement for me are the Grateful Dead and Neil Young.

And I wasn’t alone. A gentleman sitting next to me said afterward that the performance -- his sixth Cohen concert -- was by far the best he’d seen. He and his son had driven in from Oklahoma and they were overjoyed with the show, the venue and the city. For selfish and civic reasons, it was great to have Cohen play Memphis.

I have listened to Cohen’s recent live albums, and I had been following the set lists on the spring tour, so I knew what to expect from the song selections and arrangements. But even though it was a given that he’d start with “Dance Me to the End of Love,” finish with “Closing Time” and play the concert standards in between, I wasn’t prepared for the emotional punch he and the band delivered with each tune.

He exuded poetry every time he opened his mouth, kneeled on stage or tipped his hat to the backup singers. Whether it was the songs I desperately wanted to hear -- “Famous Blue Raincoat,” “Suzanne,” “Who By Fire,” “If It Be Your Will,” among others -- or some of the new ones I wasn’t as familiar with, I was enthralled with Cohen's every move, mesmerized by his every word.

I hope everyone else in attendance last night felt even a shred of what I felt during the show and what I likely will feel for a long, long time to come. It was so incredible we drove to Louisville the following weekend for his show there.

If you have a chance to see him, please do so. You won't be disappointed.
