so you're not an aficionado of latin jazz? well, me neither. but last night's show certainly sparked my interest to dive a little deeper. sure i occasionally listen to the wave 94.7and kjazz 88.1, so i was familiar with the names. i read the itunes biographies, and i learned they have catalogs of music that span 4 decades. you may be surprised to learn their influences include antonio carlos jobim, joao gilberto, herbie hancock, thelonious monk & mccoy tyner - stellar company, indeed. the burning question became, "could these 3 artists and their bands live up to the implied promise?"
all 3 bands impressed greatly with tight sets and fantastic arrangements. throughout the evening, i found myself thinking "this song washes over me so softly, so smoothly, i feel like a river rock that has been polished by gentle waters over eons of time". and "this is the perfect song for a swanky afternoon pool party". and "this other song is what you would hear from a parade float in rio or sao paulo" during carnaval. (shouldn't that really be spelled "CARNALval"?)
so many members of the mixed crowd danced throughout the show, it seemed to fully demonstrate the international appeal and strong inclusiveness of latin jazz, afro-cuban bossa nova, and salsa y tropical musical stylings. 3 words sum up the evening: cheery, energetic and sexy! now more than ever, couldn't we all use more nights like that?
