Outstanding performance, Scruggs at 87 is pickin strong!!! Loved it all, especially the super oldies...1950's style. What a treat...thanks Royce Hall, we'll be back!!

As a forty-four year veteran of banjo picking, I was eager to see Earl again as I'd only seen him once before, with Lester Flatt, in the mid-Sixties. For another, who had never seen him, this concert was probably memorable, but for me, it was forgettable. Earl is well beyond his prime: he missed many notes and played certain, simple routines over and over, and not particularly well. His band-mates were exceptional and Royce Hall is a wonderful venue for a music event, but overall, this concert was a serious disappointment. I traveled four hours each way and left feeling unsatisfied.

I have known Earl Scruggs' music for over 50 years. I knew he's getting old (87 according to his son) but I was literally embarrassed for him before the show had gone very far. He's no longer up to his former standard and simply could not hold up his end of the performance on November 5th.

It's painful to watch a man who once owned the music world from Carnegie Hall to the Grand Ol' Opry, Radio, TV, Movies and countless recordings keep going beyond the point where he should have retired gracefully. I know of no one from the field of country music who ever became so well known to the general public for his work as Earl Scruggs. I hope he's remembered for what he once was and not for the performance he gave on November 5, 2011.

Lots of good music but not a good portrait of Earl Scruggs.

Merle Jagger was a wonderful surprise. I had never heard of them but really enjoyed their music and would definitely go see them if they are playing around LA. Earl Scruggs...I am conflicted about his performance. On one hand, I have to give him credit for going out there at the age of 87 to perform. On the other, I felt bad. It was almost like he was being used as a prop. At one point in the concert, I thought he might be asleep. His son kind of kicked his chair to cue him and then all of a sudden he awoke and played his portion of the song. I am not 100% sure he was asleep, he could have just been extremely still with eyes downcast, but nevertheless, he didn't seem like he was enjoying himself. It was also more of an ensemble performance than Earl Scruggs on banjo. He would come in on certain songs and play a small portion but most of the music was played by his sons and other band members. I have so much respect for the man but I feel like he should just enjoy his age and relax and not have to tour.

It was a honor to take my boyfriend to Earl Scruggs on Saturday night at Royce Hall. Mr Scruggs is seen to many (including my beloved) as Mr Bluegrass, his banjo playing, and his time with Lester Flatt are legendary.

It was a nice crisp November evening, beautiful venue, easy parking, very pleasant.

His band is very capable; especially the fiddle and slide guitar players. Mr Scruggs plays with 2 of his sons, which is a nice family affair. My only critique of the evening is Mr Scruggs is quite senior in age, and while you can tell he is in his element, on the stage, receiving the accolades of his loving public, but I have to say, it might be time to enjoy his golden years relaxing at home.

If I could split the vote, it would be 5 stars for Earl & 1 for Merle Jagger. The booking agent was wacky to put these groups on the same bill. Merle Jagger is overamplified with drums that drown out the guitar. On the other hand, the musicians with Earl Scruggs are all fantastic.

It was a good show but Earl is slowing down and can't make that banjo ring like he used to. I don't think it is very reasonable to expect an 87 year old man to be able to perform like he did back when. Overall it was good experience and I am happy I got to hear the living legend.

it was so exciting to see Earl Scruggs in person. I was in a banjo club in the 60's. All I could do is strum the chords but I did learn to pick a couple of songs. To see a man of his age still have his dexterity as well as remember the right chords and fingering was amazing.

I have to give Earl and his friends and family lots of credit. Earl is getting older but yet he seems to love what he does as much today as he did sixty or seventy years ago. I love bluegrass music and to get to see Earl and his band was a true pleasure. His boys are very patient with Earl and that means a tremendous amount to me. If I ever had the chance like they have to play music with a legend such as Earl, it would be a great pleasure to perform with him as long as he wanted to. Great show and also a great opening act. Pat Terry is a very talented singer/songwriter. His other musician with him was great. Thanks for giving me and my wife a chance to see some of the greats.
