I'm a really small person. During this show, I wedged my way up to the front so I could see and breathe, and this being my first time in a pit? Oh man. I'll tell you.. normally at shows I'm a primadonna and get to chill backstage, so I came out of this injured! However, it was a minor price to pay to see this show.
I was only there to see Tool, but I'll admit I came out of this event an Alice in Chains fan. They were great! Wolfmother was amazing. Atreyu was awful live- I couldn't recognize any of the songs until the choruses. And I'm not big on Linkin Park, but they played a great show! Chester is exceptionally good live. I was impressed.
Now, I'm a big Tool fanatic. This was their first show I've been to believe it or not, so I was extremely stoked to see them play. I was thankful Maynard even showed up, first of all. When they came out to play, he was on crutches and asked us to "acknowledge his sacrifice" because "any other arrogant a**hole musician wouldn't even show up injured." His exact words too. Thank you Maynard. haha.
I wasn't exactly disappointed with the show, but there were things that irritated me about the event. One is that I'll never go to another show hosted by KROQ (sorry guys) because of what I felt was poor planning and false advertisement of the "VIP" tickets. They promised shade, food, water, our own bathrooms, etc for a ripe price of $125 (total ended up being $150 because of insuring and getting my ticket mailed to me, etc... I was ready to pay $500 to see Tool though, so it was whatever), and we didn't exactly have any of that like you would think. It was up to par with a normal outdoor show. Needed sunscreen, it was fast food, porta-potties, etc. On top of it all, the general admin tickets were in the nosebleeds, but several of those people were able to get into the VIP ticket section so there probably wasn't much point to getting the more expensive ticket in the first place. The whole thing really seemed poorly planned... and the venue for it could have been a LOT better. We were on what's usually used as a horse track. Ah well. On to the show, right? By the time Tool went on, the one thing that really bothered me was the sound... someone messed up their sound settings. We could barely hear Maynard, and the rest of it was overly amped. Granted, as soon as I was able to grip the railing and keep my position up in the front, I zoned in with the music and had a great time.
I figure I'll go to their next show in California anyhow, so I'm not too disappointed. I still loved it, minus the bruises and scrapes. =]
