The Trio Voronezh played to a less than filled room at Villa Montalvo, and those empty seats don't know what they missed. The unfamiliar combination of a the lute-like domra, a bass balalaika and a button accordion filled the comfortable room with astounding music. The first half of the program was mostly familiar pieces from the classical repertoire,a Vivaldi, a Bach , and several Russian works. The Shostakovich work was not familiar, but Saber Dance and the March from "The Love of Three Oranges" clearly were.
Without a printed program, it was hard to identify the unfamiliar composers, like one Russian who wrote an extended piece that was pure ragtime. Which brings me to my final point: Part of the appeal of the Trio Voronezh is that they are intensely, even compellingly rhythmic. I could look around the room and see tapping feet in the audience.
