This Phillip Glass opera is superb! And the performance was amazing; beautiful voices, excellent orchestra, gorgeous costumes and wonderful story telling. The whole production reflects the minimalist approach for which Glass' music known without being arid. Staging of the singers, and the backdrops allowed the music itself to shine through from both the orchestra and the singers. In addition, it is a multimedia production, with spoken word, projected scenes from both ancient Egypt and modern Egypt. All aspects were beautifully interwoven. A wonderful evening, well spent.

Akhnaten was a well-staged production, done in an approachable, well-paced manner for a 20th Century opera. The music of Phillip Glass flowed easily with the able conducting of Arthur Fagen. Voices projected well in Clowes Hall, and the acting of the principals was credible. The super titles were helpful, though not always moving with the singing. The scenery and lighting were well done. The costuming carried a Japanese motif, which I found odd, but the costumes of the pharaoh, queen and queen mother were excellent. It was an able production, which I hope will reappear in the future.

This is the worst production I have ever seen. The costumes were good the set was good the orchestra was good....yet still these items were not enough to redeem the 4 hours wasted that I will never get back. Do not go to see.

I attended the Saturday 3/9/13 production. The opera staging and orchestra were especially excellent. I hope a future collaboration between the IU School of Music and the Indianapolis opera will come sooner than later. I would see it again, if I could.

Absolutely beautiful piece of music. The emotion that Philip Glass captures in his music is indescribable. Trance like experience. Loved it and cant wait for other works like Einstein on the Beach to come through town.

The opera Friday night was unbelievable! Glass' music was a cacophony of notes gobbling each other up, struggling for individuality within their own, ultimate congruence in the sleekest way. The vocals were un-toppable! The countertenor, Brennan Hall, was a surprise and as pure as Egyptian sands! The sets were spare and modern, but sophisticated, with the use of video displayed on screens, interspersed poetic text, and enthralling lighting! Modern-day Egyptian scenes and politics were interwoven with ancient Egypt, giving the night a timeless feel, wrapping everything in an ethereal gauze of something like musical magic! Thanks to that excellent cast and crew for a transfixing operatic event!

This was the first collaboration between IU Opera and the Indianapolis Opera company. Hopefully this will become an annual event! The IO usually stays with the tried and true operas, but this was a bold move for them and it was outstanding. The costumes, sets, and most of all the talent that went into this performance was unforgettable. My wife doesn't like Phillip Glass but she said this was one of her top three operas of all time. We talked with friends after the performance and they all agreed this was a once in a lifetime experience. Many kudos to the artistic team who saw this through and we hope they will collaborate again!

Ahknaten was the worst opera I have ever been to. I am a big opera fan and love ones like Carmen, Phantom, Les Miserables, Madame Butterfly, etc. This one however was so repetitive and minimalist in the music that is was hardly bearable to listen to. The singers literally did nothing on stage except to walk around a little bit. I was so bad that it received minimal applause at the intermission and people made fun of it in the bathroom during break. Eventually it was so repetitive that we ended up leaving early because we couldn't' stand it any more. I drove 3 hours to see this show. I am shocked that anyone would ever approve such a bad opera to move forward. My husband commented that he hoped that it wasn't anyone's first opera because they would probably never go back if it was. When I left, the lady at the door questioned why I was leaving and said that this contemporary piece is not for everyone and it is really repetitive. It is a shame because the costumes were really nice, and it could have been great with different music.
