It's difficult to praise sufficiently the all star cast of this magnificent opera, one of Giuseppi Verdi's very finest, which Teatro Lirico D'Europa performed according to the highest standards of European opera. Each singer/actor brought to this performance an appropriate enthusiasm for the composer's genius. Olga Orlovskaya's Violetta exhibited an exuberance and a vocal vitality quite beyond the usual, while her interpretive sensitivity reminded the listener of performances by the great Maria Callas herself. Orlin Goranov's Alfredo was just a bit subdued and understated, but despite his regrettable reticence his talented costar Orlovskaya carried off the entire action superbly. Hristo Sarafov as the Baron could have shown just a little more vigor, but the evident restraint of his interpretation was I believe within the limits of Verdi's characterization for this designedly stultified persona. Just a little more appropriate anger would have better fleshed out this secondary but essential character.
I must happily say that the balance of the entire supporting cast along with Olga Orlovskaya's outstanding delivery more than adequately carried this complete presentation to a new height for Daytona.

We were so very excited to see the Russian National Ballet troupe - but what a shocking disappointment! From the stained costumes, to the grossly anorexic principle in the first act - there was barely anything redeeming about the performance. I realize we live in Daytona Beach and it's the home of bikes and stock cars, but seriously? We can't do better than this? (1) There was no orchestra, only a weak recording (2) The dancers costumes were stained (3) One of the principles was so grossly anorexic, everytime she moved across the stage folks around us would gasp and comment on her weight (or lack thereof); she was so weak she was trembling (we were on the first row, yuck) (4) They condensed the whole story of Romeo and Juliet in to less than one act - and counting the intermission we paid handsomely for a 1 hour total performance of so, so....So disappointed! In addition, the cosmetic fixes that are in need at the Peabody are dire - looks like the ceiling is coming down in places.

My wife and I enjoyed the presentation last evening. Understanding, Daytona Beach is not quite the cultural center of Florida, we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the performance. Being a performer and have attended many operas and other musical events I can recommend this performance to most anyone who would like to attend. The Peabody is usually acoustically sound but in this case the voices many time died in the hall. No fault of the singers. There talent was well demonstrated and felt their interpretation of the material was excellent.

The conductor was not the most experienced and I didn't enjoy Beethoven's 9th as much as I usually do. However the Jacksonville Symphony Chorus was excellent as always, even though they had to stand behind the orchestra because this venue cannot adequately accommodate a large chorus.

I have seen this music performed at many different venues including Vienna, Bonn,
London, New York City, Washington DC, San Juan PR, and Los Angeles. I had seven
recordings of it including the famous Furtwangler. Every performance has a few quirks.
The Peabody concert had a few problems but they were minor. The drums were badly
placed because the chorus displaced it. The horns were a bit too brassy. The baritone
was not as powerful as I like them to be. Otherwise a great concert. The conductor
was outstanding as were the soloists. The chorus shined. They were outstanding.
The concert brought tears to my eyes.
