The performance by Mikey Maramag, stage name “Blackbird Blackbird”, originally harking from Honolulu, Hawaii, but currently based in southern California, was in support of his latest release, “Tangerine Sky”, a dreamy, psychedelic pastiche of electronica with heavy use of echo guitar and vocal effects. The venue, the Mercury Lounge, is a modest room at the back of a bar on Houston Street on the lower east side of Manhattan and was filled to capacity, c. 150 people.
The performance was sublime and the audience entranced. He played for over an hour, at times crouched over his laptop on which his accompaniment was provided, producing the fullest and most complex of soundscapes. Midway through his set a rather burly gentleman sprang on to the stage to congratulate him and later deluged the audience with the contents of his water bottle (twice) from the middle of the throng before being escorted into the next room for a telling off from the most diplomatic bouncer I have ever seen, kudos to him.
It is a shame that the artist is reduced to begging for couch space on twitter from fans when he is quite clearly such an accomplished musician. Catch him if you can – highly recommended.
