Last year's SW tour was incredible... for me it was the first time I'd seen him and his solo tour band playing and I was pleasantly surprised to witness many of the cuts from Insurgentes rendered in high fidelity by such a great group of musicians.
This year, at the Fillmore (same venue), was had high expectations based on last year's experience... add to that a high level of excitement over seeing the incredible guitarist Guthrie Govan, who I have been following for some time on YouTube and elsewhere.
Well, this night was all about the music. As opposed to the heavy use of film and animation in last year's tour, the backdrop canvas was a bit more subdued, even though they did use many of the same films and techniques in lighting (shear curtain surrounding the band with film/lighting at one point, etc.). That took nothing away from the show...
Favorite tune, hands down: The Watchmaker - absolutely flawlessly executed. The live performance of this cut from TRTRTS made me go back to the studio album and listen with renewed respect. Previously, my favorite cuts from that album were Drive Home and the title cut.
