This is the first time I've seen Scott Thompson and Kevin McDonald aside from watching KITH on CBC in my youth. It was easily the most subversive thing that I had seen at the time (a good thing) and many of the KITH sketches are some of my favourite pieces of sketch comedy. The nostalgia factor was high on my list of why I went. I think these guys could be excellent stand up comedy greats if they would focus on their core competencies. It is a huge transition from sketch to standup. Why oh why did Scott Thompson do half his act on the low lying fruit of shock and awe of unsettle the audience racist humor. I'm not one of these sensitive types offended by racist humor. I, for better or worse, love Andrew Dice Clay. Scott Thompson is just not good at this sort of thing. He's the wrong vehicle. Now, smarmy gay outrage or observational humor, certainly. He's among the best, particularly when he's using his loud swooning ultra gay voice. Frustrating. These guys should really do a bunch of sketch scenes instead. All one really needs is a table and chairs and some silly hats. Situational absurdity is their lock and trade and it was simply missing from the standup set. Kevin did two songs and both of them were really funny. I came away enjoying myself and glad I went but I couldn't help but think it's like watching Micheal Jordan play ping pong all night. Inherently frustrating.
