Well let me start with the first 3 groups, Con Funk Shun, Zapp, and Cameo. They all tore it up! It was my first time seeing Con Funk Shun and Cameo, and they were really good. It was my second time seeing Zapp, and of course they rocked it. The only thing with Zapp though, they tend to get the crowd into it too much when they don't need to. Hey is the party over here or over there! C'mon now your Zapp, everybody will be into it just play the MUSIC. Doing all that just takes up time and leaves out some good jams...no "Heartbreaker"???? Are you kidding me? Reminds me when I saw the Gap Band, Charlie Wilson left out "You Dropped the Bomb On Me." I'll tell you one thing though, Cameo should have headlined that show, they were badd! Larry Blackmon and Charlie Singleton really funked it up that night!...Now, for my first time seeing GC and Parliament Funkadelic, I thought for sure I was gonna see the works. Well maybe not the spaceship ha, but definitely everything else I've seen on video, you know just the crazy onstage performance that is GC and Parliament Funkadelic. My uncle, having seen them way back when, told me everything about experiencing them live, and I was pumped. But instead, we got a practice session for the most part, or at least that's what it was like to me. Man they just went on and on, GC brought up this chick twice singing I don't know what, then his niece I guess. They must have been doing just nonsense for at least a good 30-40 min just eating up time..I thought for sure they were gonna bust out all the jams. I think I only actually seen GC but twice, mixed in with all kinds of people onstage that didn't need to be there. Just before an hr you could see the crowd start to dissipate, but we tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. We kept saying oh watch they're gonna bust out right now..never happened. I think we left with about 20 min left, maybe a little less, and the only good song I heard was "Flashlight," and it was not long at all. I was so disappointed, when they played it I couldn't even get into it. I'm not sure what GC did in the last 20 min or so, he probably busted out "Atomic Dog" for sure, but he had to have put it into a melody because there wasn't much time left. I probably wouldn't have been into it anyway. Walking out, some dude having a smoke said the same thing man. I feel bad for GC though man, after hearing his story on Unsung, things are hard...but that should be all the more reason why you should play like you've always played. Still, I should have known when they said this is the "new" Parliament Funkadelic....If I go again this year, which I do really want to, it'll be mostly for Lakeside, Con Funk Shun, and especially the SOS Band. But I will try and give GC and company another chance...
