Ann Richards appeared as if in person at the Charlotte Empire Theater last week, thrilling everyone with remembrances of when leaders were larger than life. Holland Taylor truly became Ann, according to several original office mates of Ann, who kept pinching themselves to be sure they were not hallucinating.
ANN is hilarious, moving to tears, inspiring and absolutely true to history. Once again we heard the "true grit" central Texas drawl, the honest comments on politics and life, the acerbic tongue as ANN skewered political opponents and idiots who stood in the way of her plans to help poor folks, children and all minorities.
What a night to remember! And when ANN ends, it is with a comment about Ann Richards leaving office to walk barefoot on the beach, fish and enjoy her grandchildren without even one moment of self pity or sadness at leaving Austin. Ann, where are you when we need you so badly!

Featured Review

This one woman show is smart, funny, poignant, and altogether human. Holland Taylor moved from playing Ann Richards at the beginning of the piece to channeling her by intermission. The portrayal is seamless. Taylor's script captures the adventure and engagement of life in public office while avoiding the shallow,tinny sound of the current political noise.
A superb effort and a joy to watch.

This is definitely one of the best shows I have ever seen. Holland Taylor is as amazing as the real Ann was! I didn't feel one second of boredom during the entire show. I can't believe how Ms. Taylor did this!

Early in the performance I forgot it was Holland role playing and actually felt that Ann Richards was on stage talking directly to me! What a terrific actress she is and what an impactful woman Ann Richards was! She is sorely missed!

Holland Taylor captures the wit, sincerity, and humanity of Texas's last truly benevolent governor. Recent governors have prided themselves on their execution totals. Ann RIchards fights a battle of conscience when faced with an eleventh hour appeal. Ms. TAYLOR's interpretation of Richards is perfectly accurate without being a characature. Who knew she is such a versatile and SKILLED actress. My view in one word: WINNING!

Great overall! The commencement speech was too long, making the first part drag. I ate a big lunch before and found myself nodding. This may have been more my fault than yours, however.

The second half was much much better. Taylor is a natural "telephone" comedienne and really had super great timing with the telephone parts.

We lived in Waco for nearly ten years as "visiting" Yankees and never felt we were a real part of it all due largely to our Yankee accents. My wife was almost turned down for a job she was overqualified for because she was told by her new boss that she talked too Yankee and might turn the customers off. The point is that in your efforts not to make Ann sound too corny you might be robbing your character of the twangy accent needed to make Taylor sound more authentic and not like Bennington College.

From beginning to end Holland Taylor held your attention. She told the story of Ann Richards with sincerity and compassion. She was funny and bawdy and real. If this show was still running in Chicago, I would see it again.

My partner and I took our moms to see "Ann". We cannot say enough about how much we enjoyed the play! What a wonderful afternoon.

Special acknowledgement should be given to Holland Taylor. We were in awe at her stunning performance.

Illinois would have done well to have someone like Ann at the helm...

A one woman play might strike fear in many---how can she possibly keep your attention for 1.5 hours? And yet she does---and does incredibly well. With wit, comedy, and style, this play kept us entralled and riveted. Afterwards, our group admitted it was one of the plays we have seen in many years. Whole-heartedly recommend!

Absolutely excellent show! She does a fabulous job. I truly enjoyed "getting to know" Ann Richards and only wish I had known this much about her while she was alive. She did so much for women and with such humor and grace. Anyone would enjoy this show: touching, funny, historical. I'd love to see it again. Don't miss this!

It was amazing how brilliantly Holland Taylor portrayed Ann Richards. She even looked a lot like Ann. A number of years ago I was fortunate enough to see a presentation by Ann Richards in person, and Holland was certainly "right now!" It was interesting to learn more about Ann's background and how she got to be governor of Texas and what her time in office was like. I love strong women, and I thoroughly enjoyed this play!

Having lived in Texas during Ann Richard's governorship (I did vote for her and was elated when she won!) I was blown away by Holland Taylor's portrayal of Ann. It was like being there with Ann. She was indeed a remarkable "ordinary" woman and Holland got her down perfectly. The only thing that caught my attention is that I think Ann would have said "God love you" rather than "God bless you". Southern women say "God love you." We have only been asking God to Bless us (America) since Dubya's time.
