The play was artistically and beautifully done. I appreciated the updated lines here and there that gave the piece a current flavor even though the text could have been dated.
I was surprised at the rape scene in the storyline as the movie presents the event more subtly. I brought my children [10 and 12], but I don't regret taking them as I believe that it was tastefully done and avoiding the truth about that world [granted, presented as an art form] would have made my children more ignorant of the world. There are loads of violent scenes in Shakespeare, Operas and other great classics. So it is naive to think that violence is only seen on movies, t.v. shows or video games.
What is important is the follow up dialogue and discussion that takes places among viewers in the audience. I think the great contribution Westside Story gives us is not only the music and the play itself, but its commentary on life on the streets, racial politics, the universal desire to belong and the opportunity to make a better life, and that these issues are still very relevant today.
It will give my children and I loads to talk about over dinner for many evenings to come. My kids said that "It was awesome." We had a wonderful time. It was a memory that I was glad to share with them. And I am confident they will grow to appreciate it more, as time passes.
