King Lear was strange

Location:National Arts Centre fourth stage

The decision to perform King Lear as an all native production was a mixed blessing. Some of the actors were very skilled and delivered memorable performances. The native dress while strange did not detract from the performance. A few of the minor actors were having a hard time with the dialogue and appeared to be confused as to where to put the emphasis in a sentence. Overall it was a fine evening.

The puppeteer was fabulous. His ability to do all the voices was amazing. The story was a bit off the wall.

For anyone who has ever taken music lessons this was a definite "trip down memory lane" but with laughter this time. And if you never took lessons, you can enjoy it anyway. Just hilarious!

Very disappointing. I live out of the country now and returned to the NAC with my kids to show them Canada's best. I used to have series tickets for the English theater series and couldn't believe the performance was so poor. An adult as Oliver who was taller than the other players had a weak voice and was male??? A female could have at least given some credibility. As my theater student son commented you can do something besides wring your hands under your chin for 2 hours to portray a child. He thought his high school would have done a better job. I agreed.
In the intro the producer bragged that this was a cross Canada cast but I find it very hard to believe that in all of Canada there weren't singers up to the task. There were some good voices but not enough to carry the show.
Sadly I think this will prevent many people from going to the next Christmas production given the cost of tickets.

Performance was superb. Great acting and production. The performance was in the small theatre which made us feel close to the action.
