It needs to be noted that this is NOT Disney. It is based on the book, not Disney's interpretation. It does take a bit of adjustment as to how the whole story is presented, from a dog's perspective.
I went specifically to hear the music composed by my favorite performer/singer/songwriter, Dennis DeYoung, and it did not disappoint. He has written terrific music, marked by his penchant for wonderful melodies and emphasis on powerful vocals and harmonies. I loved the variety of music, too.
The performances are top notch from the entire cast. Rachel York gives the audience a Tony-worthy, scene stealing, rafter shaking Cruella. Her vocals are simply astonishing.
The most enjoyable surprise were the children playing the puppies. They inject tremendous energy whenever they are on stage and their dancing and singing are what going to live musicals is all about. Just delightful.
Kudos should be given to the sets and staging, which are quirky with unexpected moments that are hilarious.
Costumes, especially Cruella's, are lush and over the top.
Everything is a bit exaggerated in the musical and that is how it should be. It is that kind of story.
The house was nearly full and the ultimate compliment was paid to the performers and performances -- a standing ovation.
The children in the audience I observed seemed to very much love it.
Lastly. The live dogs were an adorable touch, but their final "performance" showed exactly why they are used sparingly. They kind of lost it and many of them just ran around, forgetting their little assignments. It was charming and funny and no one I was around minded a bit!
