it was an amazing display and the flow as great. It made you reflect on the past, take a look at the present and feel proud to want to be apart of a growing future to leave a proud imprint and believe that my achievements can and will make an impact on my community. I took my daughter to show her that our history does not mean we have to settle and to strive to be the best she can be and know that hard times will only last if you letn the negative images tear you down. I want her to be motivated and see that she can be anything she wants to be and that she too can leave her imprint in American history.

I was very inspired by the I AM America exhibit! I took my whole family and they were inspired as well. I wish this exhibit could be brought back to Atlanta, I would love to see it again!!

The event cemented historical events for me from century to century. Great artifacts but wish there was more. Maybe museums could have helped with artifacts. However, securing them would have needed advanced preparation several months to years in advance.
However, excellent idea. Glad to see the exhibit and see so many African Americans that attended to view their history. I'm also glad to see Walmart as a sponsor.
Some historical names not mentioned like scientists, i.e. Charles Drew (discovered blood types but died at 50 in a car wreck from a lack of a blood transfusion) etc.

MY NAME IS EMPRESS & I AM A 23 YR OLD AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN. LAST WKEND MY GRANDMOTHER CAME FROM NC TO VISIT & I TOOK HER TO THE "AMERICA I AM" EXHIBIT. I WAS ACTUALLY VERY IMPRESSED BY ALL OF THE INFORMATION & ARTIFACTS THAT THEY HAD. I WAS EVEN BLOWN AWAY BY THE DIFFERENT SOUNDS/MUSIC THEY HAD IN EACH ROOM. ALTHOUGH THE LINE WAS A BIT LONG I ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE OF IT. BY THE TIME WE HAD FINISHED THE WALK THROUGH 2.5HRS HAD PASSED AND WE WOULD HAVE NEVER KNOWN! 2WKS PRIOR TO, I WENT TO THE GA AQUARIUM FOR THE 1ST TIME AND WAS VERY ANXIOUS TO LEAVE. TO THIS DAY I CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE FUSS. THE AQUARIUM WAS 3XS THE PRICE OF THE EXHIBIT AND NOT AS ENJOYABLE. "AMERICA I AM" IS A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE THAT SHOULD HAVE A PERMANENT PLACE IN ATLANTA, GA. IF YOU DID NOT GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND YOU MISSED SOMETHING AMAZING!!

I was able to attend the America I Am exhibit with my mother-in-law and 3 sons. It was an eye opening experience for all of us. The exhibit displayed and told a story about our black heritage that I don't think I would have been able to comfortably communicate to my children. I would recommend this exhibit to all African Americans. It was an experience that my children will never forget.

America I Am was a wonderful display of the African American experience...the struggle, pain, hopes, desires and dreams, both fufilled and unfufilled. It evoked emotions I never knew exsisted. I felt a great sense of empathy and pride.

I have attended many exhibits both here in Atlanta and the San Francisco/Bay Area. The quality and extent of the America I AM exhibit was outstanding! I was so impressed with the delivery and artifacts that were presented. When you see where we started, being brought here by force and the accomplishments we have done, it is truly amazing.
Thank God and our own tenacity!!

I learned a few things throughout the exhibit and I was also reminded of many things that I don't tend to think about on a daily basis. This is a good event to especially take your kids to get an in-person history lesson and see it head on. It is also good for your whole family to experience together.

My husband and I enjoyed the exhibit. We went on a Thursday. It was not crowded. So, we were able to take our time and truly enjoy the experience..It was great seeing so much history in one location. I encourage everyone to attend.

The exhibit was moving, enthralling, very approachable for all ages. It presented information I did not know and I am very steeped in Black History. The artifacts were unbelievable--from the items from the Birmingham Jail where Dr. King was confined to the Door of No Return in Ghana . The multimedia nature of the exhibit kept it interesting and involving. I loved that the audio feed was different than the written material. It made me feel like I was getting additional insights into the material. I loved that and everything about this exhibit.

The exhibit was excellent. Kudos to Tavis Smiley for all of his hard work and dedicaiton to bring this to different venues around the country. I especially hope our young people will leave with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the cloth they are cut from. The musical tribute at the end of the exhibit was profound, inspiring, and so true. African Americans built this country, and their imprint has influenced every aspect of American culture.

The exhibit was absolutely excellent. Tracing the African American experience from African to America was presented in a very factual and chronological way. However, I do not recall seeing any form of presentation or representation about Elijah Muhammad, Minister Louis Farrakhan and The Million Man March or Miles Davis. Why?

This exhibit was a walk through my ancestral history. There are were many things that I knew, but so much more I never heard before.
This exhibit is a much needed experience for all people. This will help all cultures and creeds understand the imprint of the Black culture.

The expectation our family had upon arriving was a history lesson that would help fill in the gaps on historical things we did not know. As it turn out we knew more history than what was shown. The beginning of the exhibit was impressive. The room of the Ghana slave port castle was great. Once we left there it was down hill the rest of the way. The rooms that followed were filled with artifacts, some real ,some replicas and other that made no sense. Each room had a theme, which most of the time went off track. The most confusing being the "Music Room"? The best part of the exhibit was the ending short film. In whole it was as if the exhibit was not completely done. Too many people and contributions were left out. Especially in the fields of medicine and science.It was as if Dr. Charles Drew, Dr. Ben Carson, Benjamin Banniker, Eli Whitney and George W. Carver did not exist. We could have done better taking our children to the library. We didn't pay for the audio tour guides, and it was a good thing we didn't. People around us were having problems getting them to work properly. An audio loop for each room would have been better. Oh and by the way, WHY CAN'T YOU TAKE PICTURES!

The America I Am project allowed us to journey into the fascinating and uniquely chronicled history of African Americans in America through the lens of historical artifacts. From the simulated slave dungeon to the evening gown of Mavis Staples, one could tangibly sense the spiritual, cultural, economic, and socio-political contribution made by those of African descent to the founding, construction, and building of America. Although the attendees were largely of African descent, this is a project that should not be missed by any American.

The America I Am exhibit currently at the Atlanta Civic Center contains quite an impressive collection of historical artifacts. From slavery to Obama as President this show covers it all. The most intense parts involve the descriptions and artifacts of the slave trade from Africa to the US and on through life as freed people. There is a rare signed copy of the 13th Ammendement , various writings and clothing samples from Frederick Douglass and other names we've learned from history. For anyone interested in ANY sort of history, this show will satisfy.
The only flaws I found were: The lighting while mood fulfilling was way too dark and not senior citizen friendly at all. The font used on the descriptive cards near the artifacts was too small for me, children and seniors. The show lacked any depth where visual arts/performing were concerned. Glaring exclusions: Dance companies: No shoes of Arthur Mitchell, no Alvin Ailey? Judith Jamison ?Only Gregory Hines signed tap shoes.( a treat) Where were Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence, Jonathan Green?
