Previously playing on the smaller theater and club circuit, with the occasional abbreviated festival performance (most recently at London's High Voltage Festival), this "evening with" performance at the prestigious Radio City Music Hall was a real game changer for Porcupine Tree.
Lighting was pretty standard for the most part, but almost half of the songs in the 2nd and 3rd sets utilized stunning films by Lasse Holie, projected on a huge screen behind the band. "Time Flies" and "Arriving Somewhere" benefited most from these time-lapse studies in motion.
The sound was one of the best live mixes I've ever heard, which is no surprise given Steven Wilson's heavy involvement with this end of production (witness his recent remixes of the King Crimson catalog).
And what can you say about the historic Radio City Music Hall, situated in the middle of the greatest city in the world. Besides being a quick hop across the Atlantic, there is no better place to have staged this showcase performance in the U.S.
Steve Wilson certainly seemed feel the same as the audience did about the evening's performance, given the very happy look on his face has he walked across the stage waving goodnight.
A flawless performance.
