I've seen Mary Poppins twice now, and it's still fantastic! The set is simply unbelieveable (who can not be entranced by a giant dollhouse that opens to reveal #17 Cherry Tree Lane), the costumes are incredibly intricate, and the lighting works wonders to invite the audience into the mood of the scene. As always, every actor was fantastic... even if I did see a matinee performance with several understudies playing principal roles. I was so impressed with the children who played Jane and Michael -- they are such professionals, and captured the essence of their characters. The best part of the show (for someone who grew up with Mary Poppins as her favorite movie) must be the music... from the big show-stopping dance numbers (Supercal, Step In Time, Jolly Holiday) to the musical narrative that opens the show (Chim-Chim-Cheree/Cherry Tree Lane) to the touching, poignant songs scattered throughout the performance (Feed The Birds, Being Mrs. Banks). Every song, whether an original Sherman brothers creation or a later addition for the stage version, completely captivates the audience and makes us exit the theatre whistling. I couldn't stop smiling throughout nearly all of the musical numbers... and there are many!
