Mr. Kidder's stories were funny and relevant--I really liked his personal reflections about life with his editor. His own account of what it is like to be a writer was exactly what I had come to hear about. I thought his voice sounded as though he was hoarse. Mr. Kidder did sort of an indifferent job of "thinking on his feet" during the q/a time.

We went to see Tracy Kidder without knowing whether he, as a writer, would be a good speaker too. He surprised us both! He is a great storyteller in print and in person. This was a wonderful opportunity to hear about the creative process for a writer I admire. But, it was also a great opportunity to hear the story surrounding this process as reflected in his relationship with his editor--a friend, mentor, and editor. Candid, funny, thoughtful.

Excellent guest speaker who presented a nice mix of selections from his work as well as anecdotes. Very amusing and appropriate to the PDX audience. Great fun!

I listened to one or two of Bill's books on tape, narrated by him. Listening to him at the Schnitz brought back the whole adventure. His voice and tone are so well-matched to the humor and observational passages in his books, that it really brings them to life.

We love Bill Bryson books so were grossly disappointed.
Acoustics were atrocious, muddy and reverberant to the extent my husband understood little of what was said.
Two old jokes and the short reading did not warrant the seat price. We will not buy PA&L tickets again.

An excellent lecture. Bill Bryson is engaging and witty as he recounts various stories and adventures throughout his career. The lecture spans many of his publications rather than focusing on one particular work.

I waited anxiously for Bill Bryson to appear and hoped he would be at least half as good as he writes. He is all of that, maybe more. He is nimble and speaks as if you were across a table from him. I wished I could invite him home for dinner. I doubt anyone at the table would be eating much except taking in his words.

As great as it was to hear in speak right in front of me, I just wish it was longer than just an hour. It was such a treat to hear this man talk about all the books I've been reading...and I'm so glad he spoke a lot of my favorite, A Walk In The Woods. Great man, great author, I will remember this forever.

After a long day at work, I rushed down to the Schnitz, thinking to myself, "Why am I going to this tonight?" But as soon as Bill started into his first witty banter I knew my decision to come was the right one.

Great night out, except that it had nothing at all to do with his latest book "At Home". After the intro, he came out and admitted his surprise, because this talk was not going to be about the book "At Home" at all. Instead he spoke of and read from other books.

Bill Bryson was entertaining, but I was a bit disappointed that there was not more substance to his talk, e.g. more about his travel experiences, his famiy, etc.

I was very disappointed with Bill Bryson. I wanting him to talk about his research for writing & I was expecting he talk about his new book of which this event titled. He informed at the start that he was not talking about his book. I could have heard a more interesting speaker at a book store event. I felt like I took nothing away from this event other than to remind myself not to ramble with sisyphaen details, building to a reading, that I then thought "and this was the punch line?'"

Bill Bryson was wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed his combination of readings and speaking. He had commentary on various topics & invited questions from his readers/audience. I did not like the reading from the high school student that preceded him. The concept of a student reading is fine, but I disliked the choice of a "winner". His writing was negative and poorly written to boot.

Wonderful author, wonderful evening. Lots of humor. The author read from his books and gave us some insight into his writing process, but the best part was to have him take me to the land of the Thunderbolt Kid and The Sunburned Land,etc.
