The Oriental Theatre has always been a special place in my life. The stage for Spring Awakening was huge - first thing I noticed. Without an inkling of the story line, the play evolved and opened up the world as timeless and challenging for me. Every character lived neatly within their role until the youthful, springlike curiosity burst through, as it does for each of us. So much energy! Such strong true voices - and the harmony - wowza! The band made everything happening flow and provided all the magic needed to maintain the energy levels. I have not cried at a live show in many years. I hope I can see this production again (and again and again) while it's in Chicago.

Poorly cast version of spring awakening. Melchior Gabor uncovincing as romantic lead and not a strong enough voice. He should have been ensemble and one of the others in that role. The acting by this cast was really great and somewhat made up for the weak vocals

A couple of the actors had very nice voices and all of them were very enthusiastic. However, the Sherman Theater had terrible acoustics and/or often the actors grumbled their lines so much of the audio was unheard (even though we sat in the front row). It reminded me of the many plays I had to sit through because my daughter was participating in a theater group - very unprofessional but cute. The air conditioning was not working so the temperature was very uncomfortable throughout the show. The theater needs a good facelift.

I was disappointed by this play. I place the failure of this production squarely on the shoulders of the director. It often felt as if the cast really wasn't aware of what the play was about and that the director wanted to do this performance for the "shock value". The entire cast never really came alive until the piece "Totally Fucked". It was the first time that everyone seemed to understand what was going on.
Forget about feeling any compassion or empathy for the main characters Melchior and Wendella. Their performances were wooden and lacked any depth of emotion.
There were, however, 3 bright spots, Moritz, Martha, and Ilse. Their performances were the highlights of this production. They brought life to a rather dull performance. And were actually able to make the audience connect to them.
Overall, I wouldn't see this particular production of the play again. I'll wait for it to come back through the Willis Broadway Series at the Civic Center.

Did someone not "get" the musical? What it's about? BALLET DANCERS? This is about raw teen-age angst and emotion...It is about pent-up immediate urges. This was so bad, I felt bad for not just the musician's onstage, but for all of the college actors who clearly had to know better than did the director what Spring Awakening is really about.

The Company of the Box Theater dad an awesome job with this show. There were some minor technical foul up's that did not really affect the show but were noticable. The theater was very Cold. We were truly amazed with the terrific performance given by these talented young performers ! Bravo!

Spring Awakening was amazing! The cast was great, the music and band were excellent and the Orpheum THeatre was beautiful. Who knew a play from 1891 would be so great as a rock musical! HOpe this show comes back again soon.

I have seen Spring Awakening a total of 4 times and it never gets old. The music is catchy and makes you listen. Every aspect of the show from costumes to the set to the lyrics and choreography is beautiful and artistic. Yes, it deals with intense subjects, but those things need to be discussed and brought up today. This is the most beautiful show and is not made for the faint of heart. It is definitely a must see for anyone.
However; the show does contain sexual situations, partial nudity, smoking, violence, and some language...so if you can't deal with that, then you may not enjoy the show quite as much.

While the music and cast members were terrific, I was a bit disappointed that the portion of the stage did not elevate, as it was supposed to do. During "I Believe," the young cast members were all supposed to surround the elevated platform while the two main characters make love. In the version I just saw, the cast was seated cross-legged around the couple. It confused me as to why it was done this way.

Very risqué, very adult content but excellently done. It shows we are STILL dealing with these same issues 120 years later. The music, talent & the writing were all excellent. I would recommend to those with an open mind.

These non-equity actors looked amazingly versatile. I couldn't get enough of the actor playing Hanschen (Devon Stone), who blew me away! Would love to see his immense talent displayed in the lead role of Melchior.

This musical is outstanding! If you loved RENT then you will definitely love Spring Awakening. Yes, this show is meant for mature audiences, mainly because of the mature content of sex and masturbation, but if you're a parent bringing a son or daughter, they will not be disappointed by the total awesome acting, music, and subject of this play!

The story was a bit dark but acting was terrific and music was outstanding (including the band.) Harmonies were very tight and lyrics were "interesting!"
Too bad that the house wasn't more crowded for the company.
Ticket prices were too high, however.
The Oriental is a beautiful theater.

This was by far my least favorite Broadway Musical EVER! I have seen 20 shows in the past 2 yrs alone. Just because a writer touches on dark difficult topics does not make for an award winning show. There were virtually no costume changes, the set was boring & forced the viewer to imagine all scenes, a school room, a barn loft, a couple sitting under a tree, where were the props? Last time I checked Broadway has a set design crew, this isn't a high school production w/o a budget. The characters were insulting to our youth. The story jumped from one dark topic to the next without plausible transition or character development. It basically was about 4 young males that made poor choices & females that were victimized. I had high hope for the music, from Duncan Sheik & I found the music to be as disappointing as the rest of the show. I couldn't wait for it to end & I was just thankful I did not pay full price for my ticket. Someone once said "bad theater is better than no theater".....on this one, I beg to differ - I'd like a refund, even for a 1/2 price ticket & I'd like the 3 hours of my life back please!

Wonderful seats, great music for a very contemporary take on a traditional story. I went with my teenager and knew that it was mature subject matter but of course, was a little awkward when there was a bit of nudity and graphic sexuality. But the actors, musicians and show was fabulous!!

I'd been excited to see Spring Awakening since he opened on Broadway in New York. I was very impressed with the entire show and glad that it lived up to the hype in my mind.

Though I felt a little snookered at learning that this is a non-equity cast, the players looked and sounded great and I am inspired to acquire the DVD of the Broadway cast performance. I think the second act has the most compelling numbers and I found the ending truly moving. I unashamedly state that my viewing of GLEE and appreciation of Lea Michelle led me to view videos from the original Broadway show which inspired my attendance of this. Recommended!
