Ah, Foals. I remember sitting at home watching the video to 'Hummer' and being impressed by the band almost immediately (not just because of the robot dancing), and in each album since I have not been disappointed. I've been to the 'Old National Centre' before, and it's such a wonderful building itself, with intricate and classic designs adorning every area, and I'm always pleased whenever I find that a band I want to see is playing there. I went with my wife, who only know a few songs by Foals, and was kind of on the fence about them to be honest, and I think she was actually more excited to see Surfer Blood (one of the support acts), solely for her love of the song 'Twin Peaks'.
We turned up a bit later than planned, and sadly missed the opening act, Blondfire. We were however lucky enough to be given a free CD of theres, which was greatly appreciated. Surfer Blood came on, opening with 'Twin Peaks', and we made our way into the main hall. Surfer Blood were very impressive overall, although the sound/accoustics didn't always seem to suit them throughout the entire show, but I think the lead singer (John Paul Pitts) sounded better live than on record. They played a few new songs, which have left me excited about the forthcoming album too.
A short wait later, and Foals came on. We were sitting now in the upgraded section by the tables. There was a big build up too, which made me slightly nervous for my wife's opinion on the show - I've seen bands play before with someone who didn't like them, and it really spoiled it for me, hence my trepidation. The sound and accoustics seemed to instantly suit Foals, each guitar interweaving sounding distinct enough to make out without sounding cluttered during the opener, 'Prelude', and it was clear to see that Foals are not a band that need a lot of studio magic to sound good- each bandmate being very accomplished. The band seemed to enjoy themselves too, with little bits of showmanship shining through, which just adds a little bit to any concert really, playing the majority of their singles, and moving between the more upbeat songs (Balloons) to quieter, building and brooding songs (Spanish Sahara) effortlessly. I had a fantastic time, and so did my wife too- Foals have been playing in her car since that night.
