I have to admit, I wasn't entirely fair to John Oliver. I lost my enthusiasm for his show early on when he said the following: " I've lived here for a few years now and I really like it here, and I REALLY want you to keep that in mind... He also mentioned that now that he had a green card he could feel freer about what he wanted to say.
He then started into a prelude about what he called the loss of america's empire. I didn't stay past that point, but left. I wasn't angry, but I found myself thinking that at best, with the troubles our country is having, hearing about the diminution of america isn't very funny. It also didn't help much that it was from someone outside of the family, who perhaps is enjoying it a little too much for my taste.
At any rate, I did notice that JO is every bit as witty and fast on his feet in person as he seems to be on his podcast The Bugle. I probably should have stuck around longer. Maybe he would have somehow made what I consider a very sad situation into a funny one. Hard to say. Perhaps a comedic theme about the diminution of america might be more popular with a british audience than with an american one.
The guy who came on before John was Ian Karmel. He was hilarious, and I enjoyed his show very much.
