I've been a fan of Blue Scholars since 2009, when I heard their self-titled album in my buddy's car. Fast forward to 2012, and I can't believe I'm seeing them for the first time ever.
The first thing I thought when I walked in was, "Wow...this place is COZY." I had gone to see Macklemore at Irving Plaza a few weeks prior and that was much larger. The Ballroom, on the other hand, was a slimmed down, more compact version of the Plaza - stage and open floor space on the first floor, balcony on the second floor.
The Flavr Blue opened up with their pop-synth/electronica, and although they were just two guys and a girl tapping on drum pads, they had a nice polished indie sound to them. Plus, Hollis, the singer, was ridiculously pretty. :-)
Next up was Brother from Another, and believe me when I said I was impressed. They looked very young from a distance (around 16 or 17, I guessed), but they performed with the energy of veteran rappers. They immediately got the crowd pumped up and dancing. Their interaction with one another onstage was totally genuine and hysterical, and it was easy to tell they loved making music together.
They were followed by The Physics, and there's not much you can say about them that everyone doesn't already know. ThigNat kept the momentum going and every time Justo came out from behind his turntables, the crowd cheered.
Then Sabzi took the stage with his laptop and it was all over. The crowd swelled to an uproar as the video screen onstage projected a countdown clock. It served as a "visual soundtrack" for the entirety of the concert, and it was a beautifully original touch. As soon as Scholars started "Cinematropolis," everyone (myself included) went absolutely nuts.
At one point during the set, they asked everyone wearing a shirt/hat related to Seattle/Blue Scholars/Sharkfacegang/the West Coast to come up onstage during "Slick Watts." To see everyone dancing together and singing along to the song was a once-in-a-lifetime sight.
And just like that, the night ended. Sweaty and exhausted, I ordered a cup of water from the bar (being underage sucks sometimes), and waited around to see if I could get a picture with Scholars. I wasn't able to, but I DID get to chat with Goon from BFA and he was extremely kind - very appreciative of the crowd and the fact that people came out to support Seattle hip-hop.
Overall: fantastic night. I keep re-living it in my head and would gladly do it all over again. #TOURALLDAY!
