What a fun event! No, it is not a thought-provoking, deep and inspiring play, but it was fun, entertaining and very enjoyable. I am glad I didn't listen to the critics. I had heard some very negative things before going, and I must not have been the only one because there were many empty seats. I overheard the people behind me saying that they had attended most of the recent plays in Chicago, and also enjoyed this remake of a classic movie. Do yourself a favor and experience Young Frankenstein for yourself!

This was quite competently done - very good performances. There were some technical glitches, but not bad and expected in a preview. We were in the front house left, and the sound system was bad at the beginning. The orchestra sounded very much like a recording. It was not bad as the show went on; I don't know if I got used to it or if it was corrected. Sightlines were horrible. The stack of speakers totally obscured the whole bit with the wall/bookcase, as well as other things happening on stage right.
I was dissapointed that it was such a straight copy of the movie; one of the most brilliant movies of all time. I guess the show is called Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein, but I was unprepared for how close it was. All the performers were quite good, but they played Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, Terri Garr, Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn ... even Mel Brooks! They did not bring anything new. But I suppose the production is stuck; if they were different, they would be in trouble, and if they were the same, they would be in trouble.
I would reccomend to those who are not familair with the movie, and to those who have not seen as many musicals. Those people would LOVE it! I merely liked it.

Just what the doctor ordered. It's an evening of laughter and music. Very Mel Brooks. Lots of fun gags. Cast is very good and appears to really be enjoying themselves.I did not go in expecting "Wicked" so I enjoyed it very much.

It was funny. For anyone who saw the movie many lines have been retained verbatim, which sometimes meant you anticipated the dialogue, but who cares....
They added scenes and the dance numbers are very very good and a few much better than the movie. e.g., Putting on the Ritz is even better than in the movie.

I have no idea how this play got a bad reveiw. I guess people take their experiences too seriously.
My fiancee and I go to a lot of plays both here and in New York and we found Young Frankenstein to be a delight. The dancing was incredible. The acting and singing great and the whole story was a great time.
Roger Bart was incredibly talented and the supporting cast including Igor, Inga, Frau Bluker and Roger's finacee would have made the original movie cast proud.

To really appreciate this performance, you should be a Mel Brooks fan. The dialog is quick and subtle with typical Mel Brooks humor. Though the content is average, the principal cast members were very good, elevating a mediocre play to a fun night out.

I was amazed at the creativeness and inventiveness that this stage production of Young Frankenstein incorporated, while at the same time holding very true to the movie version! It was an evening of pure musical, staging and acting brilliance!

I'm not sure if it was the play or the lack of audience but it seemed the usual spark of Broadway in Chicago was missing. I would estimate that at least 3/4 of the house was empty and that the some of the actors didn't feel the need to extend themselves in their performances. I had a difficult time hearing the main character, Dr. Frankenstein. I was only 11 rows from the stage so I have to assume there were sound issues. Perhaps turned down due to lack of audience. I've decided that I will no longer attend plays during the week. I think the empty house takes away from the ambiance of Broadway in Chicago. I'll stick to my weekend attendance for future plays. That being said, I will say that Igor stole the show, was very entertaining!

The movie had some of the best one liners... classic Mel Brooks. Unfortunately, the timing of delivery of some of the lines was terrible. Tried too much with making this a musical, and missed much of the comedy of the original.

I really liked this show. I'm not going to say that it was flawless. Even though the actress playing Elizabeth was a joy to watch, the material she had to work with was the weakest part of the show. Roger Bart is nothing less than brilliant in the lead role, so much so that I doubt the show would be much without him. The actors in Igor's, the Blind Man's and the monster's roles were excellent, too. It's pure silliness, so if that's what you're in the mood for, go! We giggled all the way through it, loved the groaner puns and the homage to the original 1974 Mel Brooks movie. In the leave well enough alone category, I'm not sure why he left some stuff out and over-milked other things, but overall it's just a darn good time.
