Bringing Mountain Music to the City!

With an invovative twist on what is an often stigmatized genre of music, Greensky Bluegrass turned a small Baltimore City crowd into a cocophanous "Yeehaw!" hillbilly mob. While Todd Shaeffer hypnotized the crowd right off the bat with a smooth "James Taylor-esque" demeanor, the atmosphere was quickly invorgarated with the first pluck of the banjo string. True masters of their craft, Todd Shaeffer and the Greensky Bluegrass band electrified the quaint 8 x 10 venue last Tuesday night; and brought out the little bit of "hick" that resides somwhere inside us all.

Loved this event, had a great New Years!! The Majestic Theater is a beautiful old theater in Detroit and one of my absolute favorite venues. I've never seen Greensky Bluegrass before, but they were great - really fun and amazingly talented.

First up was dinner at the Majestic Theater, I had the prime rib, Ms Loony had the lobster tail, both were excellent. We finished up and head for the Majestic Theater, inside grabbed one of the only 10 chairs. Being early does have it's advangages.

Magpodz up first, excellent tight rythym section and keyboardist. Odd band in that they have a trumpet rather than a lead guitar. No matter they can play with the best of the jam bands out there. Tight tight tight.

On to GSBS, the headliner, while an excellent musical band, the sound was glaring off the mandolin, and guitars. But they came to play. Then had magical moment during the night and locked into a groove so tight, it was like they were on rails. Excellent band see them if you can. Drinks were fairly priced, service was quick and the place was packed. An excellent way to spend NYE.

Another solid performance by the best young newgrass band in the country. GSBG came back after a month long holiday hiatus and got right back into the groove with this show.

Greensky Bluegrass are really talented young musicians who know how to play. They're hot pickin' some standards and they write excellent originals. The solos enliven the crowd and get EVERYBODY dancing.

The crowd was getting bored ... the songs went on for way too long ... band had no energy. We were really disappointed.

The bartenders were jerks.

The opening band, Whitewater Ramble was AMAZING!! The energy they brought to the stage was contagious and I can't imagine anyone in the place not dancing along! Then, Greensky Bluegrass took the stage around 10:30 (on a Thursday, which was a little late for this old girl) and also played some very inspired songs, though with a little less energy. If you are going to have a concert that doesn't start until 9, I would suggest having the lineup switched around. Though Greensky Bluegrass was great, their songs were slower and didn't keep you awake, thus, when we left between 11:30 and 12, the crowd had definitely started to peter out. Overall though, very enjoyable experience!
